Permament hair removal methods
aim to get rid of unwanted hair so that it will not regrow.
Sometimes these procedures turn out to be semi-permanent and
need to be repeated over again. Temporary hair removal methods
work for a week or two and are subject to the body's normal
rate of hair growth.
Most women treat hair removal as part of
their normal cosmetic routine. Women shave their legs and
underarms, form their eyebrows, and have pubic hair
trimmed or taken off to accommodate today's fashions. Men
on occasion also shave some of their more hairy locations
for cosmetic effect, and just about all men shave their
beards unless they are deliberately growing a beard,
goatee, or moustache. Then there are medical reasons for
removing hair and the not uncommon 'because' reasons
also.
Electrolysis has
been a very popular method and treats each hair follicle on an
individual basis by introducing a needle into the follicle of
the hair and administering an electric charge. This procedure
can require multiple treatments depending upon the size of the
area where treatments are being applied. This is a relatively
painful process, and side effects can include scaring and
infection. Expenditures for this treatment can be as high as
$1,000 to $3,000 for the pubic area or legs.
Laser removal of unwanted hair is an FDA approved procedure
that requires it to be administered by a certified and licensed
practitioner. Though this process is somewhat complex
essentially, a concentrated laser beam is utilized to kill the
hair follicles. This is a relatively painless procedure that
has the best results on those with fair skin and a dark colored
hair. Deeply tanned individuals should not use this treatment.
Cost of the procedure runs around $1,000 for the removal of
hair on the face, and a range from $2,000 to $3,000 for hair
removal from the legs and pubic area.
Similar to the Laser hair
removal treatment above, this FDA approved Pulsed Laser
procedure employs a pulsed light beam to kill the hair
follicles. This process is extremely effective for eliminating
hair from the very sensitive underarm area and the groin or
bikini area. The benefit of this method is that there are no
restrictions regarding skin color, tanning, or hair color.
Costs run from $500 to $2,000 and up, dependent upon the area
of the body treated.
Temporary hair removal methods include a number of hair
removal creams, shaving, plucking, waxing, and more exotic
treatments. What a dichotomy. While millions of balding and
hair thinning people are committing billions of dollars to grow
new hair, make it shiny and soft, or have it cut just right,
the remainder of us are laying out our dollars trying to get
rid of it!
